A judge may have to decide whether a boy with cancer should undergo more surgery, against his mother's wishes.
Neon Roberts had a brain tumour removed last year and his mother, Sally, has taken legal action to prevent him having to undergo more radiotherapy.
Ms Roberts, 37, is at the High Court trying to prevent her son from getting more of this cancer treatment.
Mr Justice Bodey may now have to make a decision on further surgery, before a ruling on radiotherapy is made.
'Not bonkers mother'Sally Roberts went into hiding with her son because she did not want him to have radiotherapy, sparking a nationwide search on 5 December before both were found unharmed.
At an earlier hearing on 7 December in the Family Division of the High Court, the court was told doctors recommended Neon had radiotherapy and said he could die if he did not receive the treatment.
At that hearing Ms Roberts said she did not want her son to have treatment, fearing it could do long-term harm, including causing brain damage and infertility.
She told the court she was not a "bonkers mother" and said she only wanted the best for her son.
On Tuesday, the court heard some of Neon's original tumour remained after the first operation and the question was now whether he had to under go a further procedure "urgently".
A doctor told the court it was "highly likely" Neon would die within a "relatively short period" without further treatment.
The judge, who previously described Neon's illness as the "stuff of every parent's nightmare", said a decision about surgery was of utmost urgency.
If Neon's parents wanted to pass the decision to him, he would adjudicate on the case, he said.
The judge said he aimed to make a decision later on Tuesday after hearing evidence.
